ADAM PENDLETON
Adam Pendleton’s artist studio is a language in black and white. For the identity, we created a Typographic grid system based on Toshi Ichiyanagi’s 1960’s piece, IBM for Merce Cunningham. Ichiyanagi’s music notations were inspired by the IBM punch cards used for data input in the early computer systems of the 1960s. It is a controlled yet poetic system allowing for the utilitarian organization typical of traditional Swiss Grid systems, but also the freedom and movement found in Fluxus’s Sound Art and concrete poetry.
Studio Pendleton is a synergetic system of systems.
“the paintings are an inquiry into the composition of subjectivity from the visual residue one leaves behind; indeed, in both the paintings and the drawings, minor moments become major moments because of how they articulate who we are or who we might be at any given moment. It’s a visual poetics of disruption.”

The Fluxus-inspired system is structured around the center gutters of the grid; reminiscent of Toshi Ichiyanagi and Georges Brecht’s concrete poetry.
