WENDELL CASTLE

Wendell Castle Collection produces handmade sculptures and furniture that question the traditional boundaries of functional design through the lens of an artist. This curated selection of contemporary furniture celebrates the life and spirit of the father of art furniture.

Wendell Castle, both artist and designer, was a pioneer from the start in the 1960s of a new type of handcrafted and sculptural forms that blurred the line between art and craft.

The designs are both bold and timeless. In keeping with Wendell’s ideals, they make a statement without taking over the conversation. These are pieces that will be enjoyed for years and generations to come.

Working in wood or in hand-carved fiberglass, he created bold and graceful expressions of pure form, through voluminous shapes that reference the body.

In order to give this project a new identity, our work began with a great research through his archives, drawings, references, press and many other sources. We were keen to undertake him deeply in order to best portray his work.

The project approaches Wendell’s creativity in an intellectual, yet very organic and playful way – just as he was. We worked this into several playful typographical layouts that follow the same natural forms which inspired him.

A free visual rhythm is applied throughout the display of both words and images.

The typographical construction was an elaborated customisation of shapes and strokes, following a broad investigation on American and Art Nouveau inspired typefaces that reflected the philosophy of the artist’s work. We meticulously customised each character to create a strong and cohesive dialogue between all of them.
